The Latter Rain Before the Sunday Law

We only have two models for the Latter Rain; 31AD and 1888. In 31AD the outpouring of the holy Spirit began on the day of Pentecost; this was the Early Rain, but the Early Rain was sprinkled with measure, before it was poured out without measure, "The act of Christ in breathing upon his disciples the Holy Ghost, and in imparting his peace to them, was as a few drops before the plentiful shower to be given on the day of Pentecost." {3SP 243.1}. So there is reason to believe that the Latter Rain will be sprinkled before it is poured out, just as it was in AD31, as "the mighty movement under the last warning of the third angel... will be similar to that of the Day of Pentecost" {GC611}, and, "...the events of the day of Pentecost shall be repeated with even greater power than on that occasion. John says, 'I saw another angel come down from heaven, having great power; and the earth was lightened with his glory.'" {SDA Bible Commentary 6, 1055}.

Ellen White said Christ would have come by 1888 if His people were ready. In 1888 we saw last day events unravelling, not as a dress-rehearsal, but as what was supposed to be the real thing. And at that time, before any Sunday Law had been passed in America, Ellen White said the Loud Cry had already started, "The time of test is just upon us, for the loud cry of the third angel has already begun in the revelation of the righteousness of Christ, the sin-pardoning Redeemer. This is the beginning of the light of the angel whose glory shall fill the whole earth." {RH, November 22, 1892 par. 7}

If you were sitting with Ellen White when she wrote this on Nov 22, 1892, would you have approached her and told her she was mistaken that the Loud Cry had already started and the angel of Rev 18:1-3, whose glory shall fill the whole earth (Rev 18:1) had come, because they had not yet seen a National Sunday Law in America? Further contesting that the angel of Rev 18, or the Latter Rain, comes only after the Sunday Law!

So Ellen White said that the angel of Rev 18 had already started the Loud Cry, before the Sunday Law had passed in the 1888 time period. She also says that the Latter Rain had already started to fall, before any Sunday Law was passed in America, "Let us, with contrite hearts, pray most earnestly that now, in the time of the latter rain, the showers of grace may fall upon us. At every meeting we attend, our prayers should ascend that at this very time, God will impart warmth and moisture to our souls. As we seek God for the Holy Spirit, it will work in us meekness, humbleness of mind, a conscious dependence upon God for the perfecting latter rain." {RH, March 2, 1897 par. 7}

Again, would any reader honestly admit that they would have approached Ellen White in 1897 and told her she must be mistaken, because the Latter Rain couldn't possibly be falling now because America has not passed the Sunday Law. Or is it that as Adventists we have not understood that, like in AD31, the Latter Rain is sprinkled before the Sunday Law, and then poured out without measure after the Sunday Law.

Mrs White said that the latter rain had already arrived before the Sunday Law, in the message of Righteousness by Faith given to Jones and Waggoner, "The Lord in His great mercy sent a most precious message to His people through Elders Waggoner and Jones. This message was to bring more prominently before the world the uplifted Saviour, the sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. It presented justification through faith in the Surety; it invited the people to receive the righteousness of Christ, which is made manifest in obedience to all the commandments of God... This is the message that God commanded to be given to the world. It is the third angel's message, which is to be proclaimed with a loud voice, and attended with the outpouring of His Spirit in a large measure." TM 91, 92 (1895). {LDE 200.2}

AD31 and 1888 are the only two parallels we have for the Latter Rain, and in both, the Latter Rain began to fall before the outpouring (either Pentecost or the National Sunday Law). Why would we think it is any different today?

The reception of the latter rain has specific spiritual requirements. No one receives the seal of God that has one spot or stain upon his character. Before the Sunday law sin must be forever overcome by those that will participate in the outpouring of the Latter Rain. The period of time when the Latter Rain begins to sprinkle (which precedes the full outpouring at the Sunday Law) is the time when the sealing of the 144,000 begins. It is the time when we fully settle into the truth, just prior to the Sunday Law test. So just as the Latter Rain and Loud Cry had begun in the 1888 time period, so too had the sealing. "...just as soon as God's people are sealed and prepared for the shaking, it will come. Indeed, it has begun already..." Maranatha, 200.

After August 11th, 1840, radical Islam was restrained by the four Christian powers of Europe, and the sealing of God's people had begun. On "Sabbath, March 24, 1849" Ellen White said the sealing had already started, "Satan is now using every device in this sealing time..." and "just now in this sealing time" EW 43.2. and 44.1

So Ellen White, in all the above quotes tells us that before the Sunday Law, the sealing, Latter Rain and Loud Cry had all, already started.

If the Latter Rain only commences at the National Sunday Law, and every Seventh-day Adventist knows that, how is it that, "...the latter rain... may be falling on hearts all around us, but we shall not discern or receive it." {RH, March 2, 1897 par. 4}? If the Latter Rain only fell at the Sunday Law, every Adventist would discern that the Latter Rain is falling (even if they knew they weren't receiving it).

It was not until I studied this message, pioneered by Jeff Pippenger of that I realised these important characteristics of the Latter Rain, that most, if not all of Adventism had misinterpreted. But are there any other characteristics of the Latter Rain that have as yet gone unnoticed? We have always thought that the Latter Rain is just going to add power to our message. That we will be preaching the same 165 year old message, only power will suddenly be added to it. But is that true? Or is The Latter Rain a Message in and of itself?
