The Latter Rain Message is a Test

If the Latter Rain message is now upon us, then it must be salvational to us whether or not we accept it and live it. Ellen White says we receive the Latter Rain or we are lost, "If we do not progress, if we do not place ourselves in an attitude to receive both the former and the latter rain, we shall lose our souls, and the responsibility will lie at our own door." {TM 507.2}

Is this message salvational just as every present truth message has been (Noah, Jeremiah, John the Baptist, Jones and Waggoner etc)?

"Obedience to the law of God, and the spirit of prophecy has always distinguished the true people of God, and the test is usually given on present manifestations. In Jeremiah's day the people had no question about the message of Moses, Elijah, or Elisha, but they did question and put aside the message sent of God to Jeremiah until its force and power was wasted and there was no remedy but for God to carry them away into captivity. Likewise in the days of Christ the people had learned that Jeremiah's message was true, and they persuaded themselves to believe that if they had lived in the days of their fathers they would have accepted his message, but at the same time they were rejecting Christ's message, of whom all the prophets had written." {LLM 33}

"Men cannot with impunity reject the warning which God in mercy sends them. A message was sent from heaven to the world in Noah's day, and their salvation depended upon the manner in which they treated that message. Because they rejected the warning, the Spirit of God was withdrawn from the sinful race, and they perished in the waters of the Flood... Looking down to the last days, the same Infinite Power declares, concerning those who "received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved": "For this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: that they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness." 2 Thessalonians 2:10-12. As they reject the teachings of His word, God withdraws His Spirit and leaves them to the deceptions which they love." {GC 431.1}

But perhaps you still think that there is no new message for us, and we are simply to keep preaching the same message that we have done for four generations, or "ages" now, "In every age there is a new development of truth, a message of God to the people of that generation. The old truths are all essential; new truth is not independent of the old, but an unfolding of it. It is only as the old truths are understood that we can comprehend the new." Christ's Object Lessons, 128.

Perhaps this message that we are identifying will fit us to receive the outpouring of the Latter Rain at the National Sunday Law? If we reject this message, then we may not be fitted for the outpouring. Again, this is how it was in the only two models we have for the Latter Rain, AD31 and 1888.

"Those who rejected the testimony of John were not benefited by the teachings of Jesus. Their opposition to the message that foretold His coming placed them where they could not readily receive the strongest evidence that He was the Messiah. Satan led on those who rejected the message of John to go still farther, to reject and crucify Christ. In doing this they placed themselves where they could not receive the blessing on the day of Pentecost, which would have taught them the way into the heavenly sanctuary. The rendering of the veil of the temple showed that the Jewish sacrifices and ordinances would no longer be received. The great Sacrifice had been offered and had been accepted, and the Holy Spirit which descended on the day of Pentecost carried the minds of the disciples from the earthly sanctuary to the heavenly, where Jesus had entered by His own blood, to shed upon His disciples the benefits of His atonement. But the Jews were left in total darkness. They lost all the light which they might have had upon the plan of salvation, and still trusted in their useless sacrifices and offerings... Many look with horror at the course of the Jews in rejecting and crucifying Christ; and as they read the history of His shameful abuse, they think they love Him, and would not have denied Him as did Peter, or crucified Him as did the Jews. But God who reads the hearts of all, has brought to the test that love for Jesus which they professed to feel. All heaven watched with the deepest interest the reception of the first angel's message. But many who professed to love Jesus, and who shed tears as they read the story of the cross, derided the good news of His coming. Instead of receiving the message with gladness, they declared it to be a delusion. They hated those who loved His appearing and shut them out of the churches. Those who rejected the first message could not be benefited by the second; neither were they benefited by the midnight cry, which was to prepare them to enter with Jesus by faith into the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary. And by rejecting the two former messages, they have so darkened their understanding that they can see no light in the third angel's message, which shows the way into the most holy place. I saw that as the Jews crucified Jesus, so the nominal churches had crucified these messages, and therefore they have no knowledge of the way into the most holy, and they cannot be benefited by the intercession of Jesus there. Like the Jews, who offered their useless sacrifices, they offer up their useless prayers to the apartment which Jesus has left; and Satan, pleased with the deception, assumes a religious character, and leads the minds of these professed Christians to himself, working with his power, his signs and lying wonders, to fasten them in his snare." Early Writings, 259-261.

Please note the next three quotes. In 1844, those who misunderstood and rejected a prophecy eventually failed the test. On Oct 23rd, 1844, those that had an incorrect understanding of the sanctuary in Dan 8:14 and were not willing to go on to search and correct their understanding failed the test, "Many who went forth to meet the Bridegroom under the messages of the first and second angels, refused the third, the last testing message to be given to the world, and a similar position will be taken when the last call is made." Review and Herald, October 31, 1899.

They obviously did not have a true experience with Christ and this led them to their error. I am not trying to focus on works, nor am I suggesting that if one nominally accepts and preaches a true message, that is all they need to be saved. I am just trying to point out that the test in in October of 1844 was on prophecy.

"I was shown what did take place in heaven at the close of the prophetic periods in 1844. As Jesus ended His ministration in the holy place and closed the door of that apartment, a great darkness settled upon those who had heard and rejected the message of His coming, and they lost sight of Him." Early Writings, 251.

If they never repented of this, and never went back to search out the meaning of the sanctuary in Daniel 8:14, and all its implications, eventually Ellen White says they fell away, as Satan answered the prayers of those who stayed in the Holy Place, "I turned to look at the company who were still bowed before the throne; they did not know that Jesus had left it. Satan appeared to be by the throne, trying to carry on the work of God. I saw them look up to the throne, and pray, "Father, give us Thy Spirit." Satan would then breathe upon them an unholy influence; in it there was light and much power, but no sweet love, joy, and peace. Satan's object was to keep them deceived and to draw back and deceive God's children." {EW 56.1}

The following note is from a DVD series by Jeff Pippenger called "Cedar Falls 2009". As you read it, please bear in mind what Ellen White says about the Midnight Cry, "At this I raised my eyes and saw a straight and narrow path, cast up high above the world. On this path the Advent people were traveling to the city, which was at the further end of the path. They had a bright light set up behind them at the first end of the path, which an angel told me was the Midnight Cry... Others rashly denied the light behind them, and said that it was not God that had led them out so far. The light behind them went out, leaving their feet in perfect darkness, and they stumbled and got their eyes off the mark, and lost sight of Jesus, and fell off the path down into the dark and wicked world below."

So the Midnight Cry was a prophecy (Dan 8 and 9) which was a test in 1844. If they failed that test and denied the true interpretation of the prophecy of the Midnight Cry, they "lost sight of Jesus, and fell off the path down into the dark and wicked world below."

The transcript from the DVD continues, "Daniel 9 is the footprint of the 2300 days, and without the footprint of Dan 9, no one would have stood on the Midnight Cry... Daniel 9 was the foundational text that led to the [1843 and 1844] chart [and the date Oct 22, 1844] and is the foundation upon what the Midnight Cry is built. In Albany in April of 1845 when... all the major Millerite leaders denied the validity of the true Midnight Cry, based upon the chronology of Daniel 9, they went into darkness. Daniel 9 was the key text that allowed those who went in with Christ by faith into the Most Holy Place, they knew that that chronology was biblical and it was sound".

Jeff Pippenger adds, "Samuel Snow is the one that brought the message to this camp meeting in August 12th-17th, and the message he brought was a message based upon the chronology of Daniel chapter 9, that allowed him to reach out into other passages of the Bible as well and identify... the Day of Atonement arrives... Oct 22nd 1844. Snow's calculation, based upon Daniel 9, where they nailed down Oct 22nd, 1844, is the message of the Midnight Cry, that made them realize, "Oct 22nd 1844, this is the message!" And they took it to the world."

Most Seventh-day Adventist's are aware that Miller made a mistake and gave up the Sabbath, but few are aware that the first mistake William Miller made was to reject the Midnight Cry which had sounded since the Exeter Camp Meeting in the summer of 1844 (he only rejected it after Oct 22nd 1844). This then led to the second mistake Miller made, which was to then go on to reject the Sabbath. The Midnight Cry was a prophetic message, so the test was over prophecy. Seeing as the events of 1840-1844 will be repeated to the very letter, does that suggest that those who now reject the prophetic message under the Midnight Cry will go on to reject the Sabbath under the Sunday Law?

"The time of test is just upon us, for the loud cry of the third angel has already begun in the revelation of the righteousness of Christ, the sin-pardoning Redeemer. This is the beginning of the light of the angel whose glory shall fill the whole earth." {RH, November 22, 1892 par. 7}

Please note that she calls this time period (before the Sunday Law) "The time of test". This is important because I would like to suggest that since 9/11, since the angel of Rev 18:1-3 has been sprinkling the Latter Rain (with measure), it has been a time of test for Seventh-day Adventists. And what we are tested on, is if we accept and live the Latter Rain message, just as the Adventists were tested on the Latter Rain message of Jones and Waggoner leading up to 1888. To be honest with you, even if, at the end of this limited study, you cannot clearly see the relevance of Sept 11th, surely this study has provided enough evidence to show that the Latter Rain, Loud Cry and Sealing begin before the Sunday Law. So if you agree with me that the Sunday Law is right around the corner, surely these events are happening now, whether they started on Sept 11th or at some time subsequent to that - they have started. And what does that mean to you personally?

When you realise that now is "the times of refreshing" when your sins are being "blotted out" (Acts 3:19), not at some future point, after the Sunday Law (so don't think that when you see the agitation for the Sunday Law you can start to get ready!), when you will awake and buy oil, supposedly before the Loud Cry goes out. Now is the time that the Lord is sealing His people, and He is now choosing those that will receive the Latter Rain without measure at the Sunday Law, by sealing those that now have no spot or stain on their characters. Who is and who is not to receive the Latter Rain is not decided from the Sunday Law onwards. When the Sunday Law is passed, all those who have lived the Latter Rain message (which must come before the Sunday Law) will receive the outpouring of the Latter Rain without measure, while Ellen White says the rest are lost. Don't be a foolish virgin who wakes up at the Sunday Law, when the Loud Cry goes forth with power, when it is too late for Christ to develop your character.

Dear brothers and sisters, I don't know about you, but I have been an SDA for over a decade. I know all about compromise. When the craving for that one cherished sin gets too much, "I'll just do it today and then from tomorrow, I'll give up for good." Or, "At the end of the month I'm gonna quit". "New Years Day I'm gonna give that up." And why did I always, year after year go through that same pattern. Well, many reasons, I didn't love Christ enough, or in the right, unselfish way. I lacked in faith. I wasn't submitted. But one reason was because I believed that today was not the day of judgement for me. I "knew" that after the Sunday Law, your sins are blotted out. So I could just wait until I saw the agitation for the Sunday Law, before I really knuckle down and get rid of those last few spots and stains. But brothers and sisters, when I realised that several years ago, Christ had already started to select those that will receive the Latter Rain and those that will not, then I realised that NOW is the time to overcome every spot and stain on my character through Christ. If Christ is selecting those who receive the Latter Rain NOW, and you only receive it when you have overcome every spot and stain of sin on your character, then NOW is the time to overcome every spot and stain through Christ. If you wait until the Sunday Law, you will have woken up at the Loud Cry, "Behold the Bridegroom Cometh" without the character represented by the oil, and you will be a lost and foolish virgin. When I realised that several years ago Christ had already started to separate the wheat from the tares in the church, and all the while I slept on, waiting for the Loud Cry at the Sunday Law to awake and trim my lamp, then I realised that NOW is the time to put away every spot and stain. Not every sin, every stain of sin, every spot of sin. If your sins are being blotted out now, then if you don't give your sins to Jesus now, in the near future there will be no more opportunity for them to be blotted out.

NOW is the time brothers and sisters. If the Sunday Law was passed today, and you knew your probation was closed, in that you have no more opportunity to develop your character (as Ellen White says), what would you say? If your probation REALLY closed today. All the years you might have believed that "one day" you will quit that "little" sin. And every day you "know" you will be eventually making it to heaven, you just need to quit that little sin; maybe tomorrow. But now, imagine your probation has closed on you, because you waited for the Sunday Law before you would fully submit, would you cry out, "If only I had 6 more months!! I would put every effort into submitting myself daily to Christ, and in 6 months I could be ready!" Well, don't wake up one day when you are already hearing about a Sunday Law, and cry that cry. Because it may be too late.

Your probation closes at the Sunday Law, "When the decree goes forth and the stamp is impressed, their character will remain pure and spotless for eternity. Now is the time to prepare." T5, 216.

NOW is the time when you have that proverbial "6 months" to put every impulse into daily submission to Christ. Morning worship is one of the most important keys. Country living is essential in my view. These things made all the difference to me after my 10 failed years of giving Christ 99%. Also, realise that it will take a sacrifice. You will have to sacrifice that craving just a bit. You will have to go without. Realise that the effort you already put into the whole 99%, will be equal to just that last tiny 1% reamining. But one thing I can promise you from painful experience, is that if you remove all temptation from your life first, then whenever temptation comes upon you unexpectedly, remove yourself, your eyes, your thoughts immediatley from that temptation, and immediately shoot up that prayer of faith, "Dear heavenly Father, please take away these sinful thoughts" or whatever may be tempting you - that craving will miraculously and mysteriously disappear. It is the mystery of godliness. You may have to pray a dozen times in one hour, but I promise you, a few days of this, and a few weeks of this, and a few months of this will have you a changed person, until the cravings are not so strong at all, eventually disappearing completely, and your nature has been changed.

Ellen White said even our sinful tendencies can be changed, so we have no tendency to sin. Read and pray about Christ; in His minsitry, in His temple, and perhaps most of all in His prophecies. When your probation closes, you will not be saying, "I wish I got that fitted kitchen after all." Or "I wish I spent more time in the office", "I wish I worked harder and could have afforded to go on that cruise." The only wish any of us will have is that we spent more time in prayer to God, pleading for His holy Spirit, for His Latter Rain in the time of the Latter Rain. Don't be among the foolish virgins who wake up at the Sunday Law and say, "The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved". Rather look to Christ and when He comes for you and hear Him say, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord." And reply to Him, "Surely this is our God; we trusted in Him, and He saved us".
